In a world where environmental challenges loom large, everyday environmentalism offers a hopeful and practical path forward. It’s a philosophy that integrates sustainability into daily life, transforming small actions into powerful collective impact. At its heart lies the belief that every individual has the capacity to nurture the planet, whether by managing waste responsibly, conserving resources, or adopting eco-friendly practices.
Everyday environmentalism is not just about grand gestures; it’s about finding joy and purpose in simple, conscious living. It’s planting seeds of change—both literal and metaphorical—in schools, homes, and communities. By empowering individuals, particularly young minds, to take charge of their surroundings, this movement fosters a deep connection with nature and a sense of accountability for the Earth’s future.
At TIEEDI, this ethos takes root through initiatives like the “Biruas” program, where students are nurtured as saplings of the forest, growing into champions of sustainability. Workshops on holistic waste management, natural buildings, and bio-enzymes illustrate how practical knowledge can drive meaningful change.
Everyday environmentalism is more than an approach; it’s a lifestyle that bridges human potential with the needs of the planet, ensuring a greener, healthier world for generations to come.
For over five years, TIEEDI has been nurturing young minds at St. Teresa’s School, Darjeeling, through its Everyday Environmentalism initiative. ‘Biruas’ (saplings of the forest) have embraced sustainability with remarkable results.
The school has earned Green Campus Awards over the past two years (Silver in 2023 & Gold in 2024), recognizing their environment-friendly initiatives. The journey is guided by Kamlesh Rai Pradhan, who has mentored students and teachers alike in this green transformation.
Recently, TIEEDI hosted a one-day workshop for the school’s teachers. This immersive experience included:
A highlight of the day was when Kamshola, a student from their school who now is an active member at TIEEDI, guided her teachers—showcasing how environmentalism empowers young leaders. The workshop ended with a cake-cutting celebration, honoring the school’s achievements.
