At around 6:00 p.m. on the 10th of July, a fire broke out within our forest and brought down one of our dearest natural dwellings – The Forest Dwelling Dormitory. There were no human casualties and we are still not able to ascertain the exact cause of the fire. When the fire was billowing up towards the sky and scorching all the tall trees around the forest dwelling, we thought we might lose out entire forest and all that we had painstakingly built over the last 8 years into the project. In that moment of crippling shock – we felt like ants in front of a fire-spewing dragon. In the face of this adversity, the team braved the flames and with the help from our village community fought the blazing fire with water pipes, buckets, sand and everything they could lay their hands upon. By the time the fire brigades arrived from the nearby towns of Kurseong and Darjeeling we had managed to stop the fire from spreading beyond the Forest Dwelling Dormitory.
